In late April of 2008, our family started a new adventure. Our 14 chicks arrived via USPS, just a few days after hatching at Ideal Poultry in Texas. We decided to order a variety of chicken breeds--all hens, no roosters--to give us a diverse flock. We ordered white-egg laying Leghorns and brown egg-laying Brahmas and Cochins.

On September 4, 2008, we received our first egg! At first, the eggs were small, but they quickly reached a good size with rich golden yolks. Unfortunately, we were hit hard with the "chicken addiction"...By 2009, we purchased an incubator and hatching eggs, and we have been both hatching and ordering new breeds since then! We now average about 60-70 chickens at any given time + our ducks, geese, and guinea fowl.
